Sensorimotor

SCHOOLS OF THERAPY

Sensorimotor therapy is helpful for individuals and couples who prefer a less traditional talking therapy. It integrates movement and bodywork with traditional talking therapy to address a range of psychological and physical issues. Sensorimotor often suits those who may have difficulty discussing their trauma as there is space for it to be conducted with a more silent approach.

How it works

When using this technique, therapists will focus on the automatic responses that the body displays as we recall events. This allows the therapist to work deeply inward to discover the root of what may be happening as you explore your dilemma. Through bodywork you will access experiences and emotions that may not be available in talk therapy, the overall goal being to discover hidden resources and to help you develop healthier patterns.

Its role in healing

Sensorimotor therapy is influenced by mindfulness, cognitive attachment theory and neuroscience. Its founder, Dr. Pat Ogden, was a pioneer in how the body plays a role in the healing process. Sensorimotor therapy believes in the body’s own wisdom and aims to unlock its potential. It enables clients to move through flight-flight-or-freeze reactions and recognise, as well as self-regulate, emotions.

Tailored to meet the needs of each individual client, sensorimotor psychotherapy varies in the number of sessions someone may attend. It is a result-focused approach and its aim is to help you respond calmly and thoughtfully to your world.
